US Public Holidays and Big Events: What's Open and When to Avoid

America has eleven federal holidays a year, but only two of them, Thanksgiving and Christmas, actually shut the country down; the rest are mostly three-day weekends that jam airports and highways while shops stay open. This guide lists every federal holiday from October 2026 through September 2027 with verified dates, explains the observed-date rule when holidays fall on weekends, and separates what is genuinely closed from what is not. It also covers the events worth crossing an ocean for: Mardi Gras in New Orleans on February 9, 2027, the Super Bowl in Los Angeles on February 14, 2027, the DC cherry blossoms, the Kentucky Derby, and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. All dates checked against official sources as of October 2026.

The short version

  • Only Thanksgiving and Christmas truly close America: on those two days most supermarkets, big-box stores, museums and restaurants shut; on every other federal holiday only banks, post offices and government offices close
  • Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026 and November 25, 2027; the Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the busiest domestic air travel days of the year, with TSA screening around 2.9 to 3 million passengers on peak 2026 days
  • When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday the Friday before is observed, and on a Sunday the Monday after; July 4, 2027 is a Sunday, so Monday July 5 is the holiday and the July 2-5 stretch becomes a rare four-day travel weekend
  • Big events worth building a trip around: Mardi Gras in New Orleans (February 9, 2027), Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles (February 14, 2027), the Kentucky Derby (May 1, 2027) and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (early October)
  • US school summer holidays run roughly early June to late August, so theme parks, beaches and national parks hit peak crowds and prices mid-June through mid-August

America has eleven federal holidays a year, but the country does not stop for all of them equally. Two days, Thanksgiving and Christmas, genuinely shut the place down. The rest are either three-day weekends that jam the airports and highways, or quietly ignored Mondays when the post office closes and nothing else changes. Here is the verified calendar through September 2027, what is actually open on each day, and the big events worth crossing an ocean for.

The Holiday Calendar: October 2026 Through September 2027

Federal holidays technically apply to government employees, banks and post offices; private businesses decide for themselves. In practice that splits the calendar into shutdown days (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day) and long weekends (everything else).

DateHolidayWhat closesWhat it means for you
Mon, Oct 12, 2026Columbus DayFederal offices, banks, post offices; most shops and museums stay openMinor disruption; some cities mark it as Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Wed, Nov 11, 2026Veterans DayFederal offices, banks; shops and museums mostly openMinor; some museums run free-entry programs for veterans
Thu, Nov 26, 2026ThanksgivingAlmost everythingMajor; see below
Fri, Dec 25, 2026Christmas DayAlmost everythingMajor; see below
Fri, Jan 1, 2027New Year’s DayAlmost everythingMajor; the night before is the big party
Mon, Jan 18, 2027MLK DayFederal offices, banks, schoolsLong weekend; museums open, often with civil-rights programming
Mon, Feb 15, 2027Presidents DayFederal offices, banks; retailers hold salesLong weekend; one of the busiest ski weekends of the winter
Mon, May 31, 2027Memorial DayFederal offices, banksUnofficial start of summer; beaches and parks packed
Fri, Jun 18, 2027Juneteenth (observed; falls Saturday, June 19)Federal offices, banksGrowing observance; museums open, many with special exhibits
Sun-Mon, Jul 4-5, 2027Independence Day (observed Monday, July 5)July 4 itself: many businessesBiggest party day of the year; four-day travel weekend
Mon, Sep 6, 2027Labor DayFederal offices, banksSummer’s last fling; busy everywhere, then prices drop

One rule explains the odd dates: when a holiday lands on a Saturday, the federal day off is the Friday before; when it lands on a Sunday, it moves to the Monday after. That is why Juneteenth 2027 is observed Friday, June 18, and Independence Day, a Sunday in 2027, becomes a Monday, July 5 holiday. The US Office of Personnel Management publishes the definitive list at opm.gov; check your specific museum, tour or store on its own website the week before, since private closures vary.

Thanksgiving: The One Day America Closes

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November: November 26 in 2026, November 25 in 2027. It is the closest thing America has to a national shutdown day. Federal and state offices, banks, schools, most museums and attractions, and most big-box stores and supermarkets close for the whole day; Walmart, Target and Costco have all kept Thanksgiving closures in recent years. Most restaurants close too, with hotel dining rooms and a few diner chains as the exceptions, and the ones that stay open fill up.

Travel around it is a spectacle. The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are reliably among the busiest domestic air travel days of the year; TSA has been screening roughly 2.9 to 3 million passengers on 2026’s peak days, and holiday Sundays push toward those numbers. Book Thanksgiving-week flights two to four months out, and use the price alerts in Google Flights rather than hoping for a late deal. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York is free to watch from the street if you arrive early for a curb spot.

Your action list: buy groceries Wednesday, not Thursday morning; if you want a restaurant Thanksgiving dinner, book the hotel dining room or open restaurant weeks ahead; plan Thursday itself as a slow day (a walk, a movie, since movie theaters are open, and an enormous meal, whose traditions we cover in our American food guide).

Christmas and New Year: Quiet Days, Loud Prices

Christmas Day, a Friday in 2026, is the other true shutdown: quieter even than Thanksgiving, because nobody is traveling that day. Museums and most attractions close, transit often runs reduced Sunday schedules, and the classic American Christmas plan for those left out of family dinners is Chinese food and a movie. If you are in a city, expect empty streets and a handful of open hotel restaurants; book those in advance.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the opposite: children are out of school, theme parks and ski resorts run at peak pricing, and New York hotels hit some of their worst value of the year. New Year’s Eve in Times Square is free and famous, but it means standing outside for many hours in late-December cold with no restrooms, so most visitors are happier at a rooftop bar or a park fireworks display; either way, book restaurants and parties weeks ahead. For what late December does to ski costs, see our winter and skiing guide.

July 4 and the Three-Day Weekends

Independence Day is America’s biggest collective party: fireworks in every town, with the headline shows on the National Mall in Washington and over the East River in New York. Because July 4, 2027 falls on a Sunday, the observed holiday on Monday, July 5 turns it into a rare Friday-to-Monday four-day weekend, so expect that stretch to be busier and pricier than a usual July 4. Watch the fireworks from a bridge, a waterfront or a hill rather than squeezing into the primary viewing area, and use transit, since road closures paralyze city centers.

Memorial Day (May 31, 2027) and Labor Day (September 6, 2027) bracket the summer, and both mean the year’s heaviest highway traffic and packed airports as families make the most of the long weekend. National park gate lines are at their worst on these weekends; if your dates are fixed, arrive before 8am. Our national parks guide covers which parks need reservations and when.

Events Worth Building a Trip Around

EventWhenWhereBooking reality
Mardi GrasTuesday, February 9, 2027 (parades run the two weekends before)New OrleansHotels price up and sell out three to six months ahead; book by late autumn
Super Bowl LXISunday, February 14, 2027SoFi Stadium, Inglewood (Los Angeles area)Tickets live on resale markets; area hotels spike hard that weekend
National Cherry Blossom FestivalLate March through mid-April 2027Washington DCPeak bloom usually lands between the last week of March and the first week of April; the National Park Service can only forecast about ten days out
Kentucky DerbySaturday, May 1, 2027Churchill Downs, LouisvilleBook hotels months ahead; general-admission is cheaper but you will not see much
Fourth of JulySunday, July 4, 2027Everywhere, biggest shows in DC and New YorkWatch from a distance; book city hotels early
Albuquerque Balloon FiestaEarly October (the 2026 edition ran October 3-11; 2027 dates post at balloonfiesta.com)Albuquerque, New MexicoRooms near the field book up nearly a year ahead; mass ascensions happen at dawn

Two notes on timing. Mardi Gras is not one day but a two-week season, and the parades of the two weekends before Fat Tuesday are the local favorite, cheaper and easier to watch than the Tuesday itself. And the cherry blossoms are a gamble by nature: the National Park Service, which tracks bud stages at nps.gov, says forecasting peak bloom more than about ten days out is close to impossible, so book refundable DC lodging and enjoy the festival regardless of where the buds are.

School Breaks: What They Do to Prices

American schools are out roughly from early June to late August, with the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends as the bookends. Between mid-June and mid-August, family destinations (Orlando, beach towns, the big national parks) hit their highest prices and thickest crowds of the year. Spring break lands in March and April: colleges first, then school districts, sending a surge through Florida beaches and theme parks just as desert and Southern city weather turns excellent.

Your move, if you have flexibility: travel in late April through May or mid-September through October, when weather is still good in most regions (our best time to visit guide breaks it down region by region) and family-driven pricing has collapsed. If your dates collide with a school break anyway, budget with our budgeting guide and run actual hotel and flight numbers through the Real Price Calculator before you commit.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every holiday is a shutdown. Only Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day truly close the country. On MLK Day, Memorial Day or Labor Day, shops and museums are open; the disruption is crowds, not closures.
  • Shopping on Thanksgiving morning. Most supermarkets are closed all day. Buy groceries the day before, early, because Wednesday lines are long.
  • Flying the Wednesday before or the Sunday after Thanksgiving without booking months ahead. These are reliably among the busiest domestic travel days of the year; fares spike and cheap seats vanish early.
  • Expecting museums and tours to run on Christmas and Thanksgiving. Most close. Plan walks, movies and meals instead, and book the open restaurants in advance.
  • Treating Times Square on New Year’s Eve as a casual drop-in. Pens fill from early afternoon, and there are no restrooms once you are in. Commit properly or celebrate elsewhere.
  • Thinking Mardi Gras is one day. Book New Orleans for the parades of the two weekends before, or at least arrive by the Sunday before Fat Tuesday.
  • Assuming July 4, 2027 is a Sunday-only affair. The Monday observed holiday makes July 2-5 a four-day weekend; book hotels and park entries accordingly.
  • Planning a DC cherry blossom trip around fixed dates booked months ahead. Peak bloom moves; the National Park Service forecasts only about ten days out, so keep plans flexible and refundable.

The Best Time to Visit the USA, Region by Region

The United States is the size of Europe, so the honest answer to when to visit depends on where you are going: April-June and September-October are the all-purpose sweet spots, but the South lives with hurricane season from June through November, the Southwest becomes dangerously hot in summer, and Seattle is actually nicest when London is grimmest. This guide breaks the country into regions with realistic seasonal windows, explains what the official Atlantic hurricane season dates mean for your trip, covers the New England foliage calendar, and flags the holidays (Thanksgiving, July 4, Christmas) that make flights and hotels spike. All timing and fee rules verified against official sources as of October 2026.

Outdoors

Planning an Alaska Trip: Cruises, Ferries and Denali

Alaska is the one American destination where the planning is the difference between the trip you imagined and an expensive tease: cruises book a year ahead, the Denali bus season releases its reservations each December, and the distances swallow improvised itineraries. This guide compares the two classic structures, the Inside Passage cruise and the road-and-rail land trip, and the ferry that links them, with verified 2026 costs and rules, the bear-and-bugs practicalities, and the timing windows that save real money.

Budget

What a US Trip Actually Costs: Daily Budgets, Hidden Fees and Saving Real Money

The honest answer to what a US trip costs is a formula, not a number: lodging is the biggest lever, ground costs run $80-250 per person per day depending on style, and a stack of American-specific fees (tips, sales tax, resort fees, bag fees, parking, the national park nonresident surcharge) adds 25-40 percent to the bill you sketched at home. This guide builds daily budgets for three travel tiers across city trips, park road trips and theme-park weeks, compares expensive and affordable cities, lists every hidden cost with its real size, and closes with the saving strategies and the currency buffer that keep a plan intact.
